Tomorrow, we’ll be raising a glass in honor of National Drink Wine Day. In preparation for one of our favorite holidays, we wanted to let you know about some fantastic wines from Total Wine & More that boast sky-high ratings – but won’t break the bank.

California’s Russian River Valley produces remarkable red and white wines that have helped the region accrue a reputation that can compete with more famous neighbors like the Napa Valley. With a 90-point rating from Wine Enthusiast, the 2013 Martin Ray Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley is a perfect example of the quality that’s become synonymous with the area. With balanced flavors of pear and lemon and bright acidity, this wine also offers an inviting hint of orange blossom and caramel on the finish.

Another region that’s experiencing a rapid growth in popularity is Columbia Valley, which sits in southern Washington. Boasting a 90-point rating from Wine Spectator, Waterbrook Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2012 offers flavors of cherry, cinnamon and cream that lead into a long and expressive finish. From Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah to Chardonnay and even Riesling, the state of Washington is becoming a leader in American winemaking.

While the most renowned Old World wines can bear high price tags, we found plenty that offer incredible quality at equally incredible value. Portugal’s Douro Valley is producing fantastic red blends like Quinta das Carvalhas Reserva 2011, which has a 91-point rating from Wine Enthusiast. This powerful wine offers firm tannins and flavors of dark berry fruits and spice.

Bordeaux, source of some of the world’s most sought-after wines, can produce pricey bottlings. But  we carry a variety of exceptional Bordeaux that won’t cause sticker shock. The 2009 Chateau Feret Lambert Bordeaux Superieur is a full-bodied red rated  90 points by Wine Spectator, thanks to its concentrated flavors of cassis and blackberry fruit  framed by hints of toasty mocha and espresso.

To round out our favorites, we’re traveling to southern Australia. Jip Jip Rocks produces a range of wonderful wines, including  a 2012 Shiraz/Cabernet blend that earned a score of 93 from internationally renowned Australian wine critic James Halliday. This fruit-driven wine offers fragrant aromas of red and black fruits, and speaks to how far Australian winemakers have come over the past decade.

With over 8,000 wines from which to choose, there’s no place better to shop exceptional wines at exceptional values than Total Wine & More.

There’s a lot of pressure to give the right gift on Valentine’s Day, isn’t there?  It can’t be too cheap, can’t be too expensive, it should be a token of your affection – but not too affectionate! Where do you even begin?

If you’ve been smart enough to fall in love with someone who enjoys a good glass of wine, you can relax. At Total Wine & More, we’ve set aside a collection of wines that are perfect for Valentine’s Day – this Sunday.

Whether you want a fun bottle that simply says, “Hey, I think you’re kind of cute,” something delicious to accompany a romantic dinner or a bottle of bubbly to celebrate how lucky you are in love, we have it ready for you. What do you want to tell your Valentine?

valentines-rose

Skip the roses and reach for rosé instead.

I’m sweet on you. Pick a bottle of red wine that’s slightly sweet, easy to sip with flirty conversation and a box of chocolates, but substantial enough to enjoy with a good meal. Wink Risqué Red, from California, is a fun and fruity wine that offers a wink and a smile to your Valentine.

You are luscious! Sharing a yummy dessert with your Valentine? Pour yourselves glasses of Paradise Peak Sweet Riesling. This Washington wine, with decadent aromas of apricot and peach, balances rich flavors with a crisp finish. Try it with a fruit tart or cream-filled pastries.

You deserve a bouquet of rosés.  Chill a refreshing, dry rosé from the South of France and serve with tasty snacks – olives, nuts, mild cheeses – that complement its Mediterranean style. Share the berry-scented Chateau La Tour Sainte Anne with a Valentine who appreciates an elegant wine.

I love you, and I made you dinner. You clearly have things under control! Now you just need a bottle of delicious Anakena Red Blend, from Chile’s Central Valley. Its jammy berry flavors will make a great pairing with a cozy spaghetti or steak dinner.

Champagne - Rondel GOLD - blog post

You’ve got that special sparkle. Rondel Gold Brut Cava, a highly rated bottling of Spain’s classic sparkling wine, is perfect to pop open when you feel like celebrating. In its shimmering, golden wrapper, it’s fun to share with someone who loves a touch of glamour.

Stop by any Total Wine & More stores this weekend, and we’ll help you find the perfect selection for the holiday. You can also shop online at www.TotalWine.com.

Crimson Ranch, Two Cents

New from the Michael Mondavi Family:  Crimson Ranch

The Mondavi name is synonymous with pioneering California winemaking. With his new Crimson Ranch wines, third-generation Napa Valley winemaker Michael Mondavi has created a trio of wines that are quintessentially Californian.

Crimson Ranch “Each has elements of winemaking style that has made California famous,” says Taylor Barneby of Total Wine & More’s wine-buying team.

“The Chardonnay is creamy and buttery, with bright tropical fruit flavors. The Cabernet is full-bodied and dense, with rich vanilla and red fruit flavors. And the Red Blend is a fruit basket of flavors, with the smooth and succulent finish California blends have become known for.”

At the Michael Mondavi Family Estate in the Napa Valley, Mondavi produces several notable wines including his flagship Cabernet, M by Michael Mondavi, and the flavorful and elegant Isabel Mondavi wines.

For the Crimson Ranch wines, Mondavi drew on the family’s longstanding relationships around California to source fruit from the state’s best winegrowers.   The result is a collection of rich and fruit-forward wines that offer an excellent – and affordable – introduction to Michael Mondavi Family wines.

Tried the new Crimson Ranch wines? We’d love to hear what you think. Leave your review in the comments below.
