With football season in full swing, Sundays become much more than yards rushed and touchdowns made. Victory stands on the back of coolers and snack tables across the country, and Total Wine & More can help you make the perfect play when it comes to pairing brews and food.

Chips, Salsa, and Dip

In the realm of party snacks, there are few things more sacred than chips and salsa. Malt- forward and boasting a touch of sweetness, Amber and Red Ales complement this dynamic culinary duo, countering the heat of the salsa and the saltiness of the chips. We carry a wide assortment of highly rated Amber and Red Ales to satisfy any fans, no matter what jerseys they wear. Given a score of 92 from Draft magazine and awarded a World’s Best medal at the 2013 World Beer Awards, Oregon’s Full Sail Amber is a sweet, malty and medium-bodied Ale with a spicy, floral hop finish that represents everything we love about this beer style.

Wings

If, like many of us, you can’t help but gravitate to the platter of wings, we have just the beer for you. The bold flavors of Buffalo wings meet their match in the form of India Pale Ales (IPAs). Thanks to their bitterness and citrusy hop flavors, IPAs enhance the taste of Buffalo wings, while easing the heat of the wings’ sauce for more enjoyable snacking. In addition to giants like Sierra Nevada, Total Wine & More sells a remarkable collection of IPAs, from World Beer Cup Gold medalist Ballast Point Sculpin IPA to 97-point Firestone Walker Easy Jack.

Grilled Meats

No game-day party or tailgate is complete without some type of deliciously chargrilled meat. It’s happy coincidence that much of the NFL season takes place in the fall, a time of year when our shelves are stocked with limited-release Oktoberfest beers. These seasonal beers were born to pair well with German-style foods, which mean they’re perfect for brats, burgers and hot dogs off the grill. Paulaner Oktoberfest, a perennial favorite, offers up the light hoppy flavors and notes of sweet malt that have become synonymous with the style.

You may not know this, but many of the team members you see in Total Wine & More are Certified Beer Servers in the Cicerone Program, ready  to help you find the right brew to take home with you.

Okay, we know many of you are scratching your heads wondering, “What the heck is a Certified Beer Server in the Cicerone Program?”

We’re glad you asked! Think of the Cicerone Certification Program as the beer counterpart to the sommelier certification for wine. Since its founding, the program’s mission has been to provide better knowledge and training about beer and beer styles to professionals in the beer industry. The people this program helps inform range from brewers and brewery employees, to beer servers in restaurants and retail store employees where beer is sold. The program began in 2008, and today helps bring beer knowledge and professionalism to beer sales all around the United States.

Now you might be thinking, this is all good and well, but how does that help me when I visit Total Wine & More? The answer is that it helps our team members assist you in selecting the right beer for any occasion. With 135 stores across 18 states, we now have hundreds of team members who are Certified Beer Servers in the Cicerone Program, and even a few Certified Cicerones. That’s more than a couple of team members per store who can help you with any beer question you may have.

Looking for the perfect brew for a backyard BBQ that will please everyone? We can help. Maybe you love a specific beer style, such as IPA, and want to broaden your tastes with some new beers to try. Our team can help you find the perfect new brews to take home.

growler-8

In some states, our Cicerone Certified Beer Servers take their love of beer to a whole new level. They not only help with the recommendation of the right brew, but they’ll perfectly pour fresh draft beer to fill a growler you can take home. Visit our Brewery District at select stores in Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington to grab a 32- or 64-oz. growler of craft beer to go. You can even see our growler menu online at www.totalwine.com/whatsontap.

So stop in and take advantage of our knowledge the next time you need to stock up the fridge or cooler. With American Craft Beer Week happening right now, it’s the perfect time to stop by and see your local beer team during the last weekend of our Total Beer Experience. See you soon!

Summers Beers for Patio Sipping and Lawn Mowing

The hot weather is rolling in, and those big stouty beers no longer look quite as appealing as they did this winter. But many styles of beers are perfect for the season, so take a look and familiarize yourself with the brews you need to be enjoying this summer.

Kölsch

This German beer style is a go-to when summer hits. Depending on the brewery, it can be light- to medium-bodied, have a slightly fruity taste or show a hop profile that varies from medium to slightly more aggressive.  For the less hoppy version, we recommend Goose Island’s Summertime Kölsch. Its lightly fruity aroma and crisp finish make it a great choice for sipping on the patio.

kolsch-2

Munich Helles Lager

This beer style is a great “lawn mower” beer if ever there was one. Created at Munich’s Spaten brewery in 1895 to compete against popular Pilsner-style beers, Munich Helles Lager is similar to, but has notable differences from, traditional Pilsner. “Helles” means “bright” in German, and this style pours a clear, bright straw yellow to pale-golden color with a creamy white head. Unlike German Pilsners, this German Lager style is more malt-forward, exhibiting bready, toasted grain flavors with only a hint of sweetness. It’s not meant to be overly complicated, just downright enjoyable. Cigar City’s Hotter than Helles or Ninkasi Brewing’s Helles Belles are great choices if they are available in your area, but there are many great variations on this style. Explore and find the one that you enjoy most!

Fruit Beer

It’s summertime. You want something sweet and crisp on the palate, and that’s what you’ll get with this style of beer. Wheat ales are usually the go-to base for this style of beer, but not always. The fruit character on these beers can range from mild to intense, and brewers can select from a long list of fruits to really make a brew their own. Popular fruits include cherries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, apricots, peaches and pomegranates. Beers like 21st Amendments Hell or High Watermelon, Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat or Abita’s Strawberry Harvest Lager are great selections for summer.

hell-or-high-watermelon-blog

Session IPAs

Hop lovers – we didn’t forget about you. But do you really want to drink a double IPA under the hot sun?  That’s why this style has gained in popularity over the past few years. A lower-alcohol version of an India Pale Ale that keeps you cool, but with just as much hop punch? Sign us up! Great citrus notes and a variety of hops can be found in these beers, like Founder’s All Day IPA and Firestone Walker’s Easy Jack IPA.

Craft beer - mix and match

These are just a few selections that are making the list, but everyone has their preferred style and choice for summer. Stop in and discover yours from our selection of more than 2,500 beers, and don’t forget to check our online growler menu to pick up a fresh fill for the season from one of our Brewery District growler filling locations. Cheers!

National Beer Day, New Beer's Eve

Prohibition_WeWantBeer

What are you doing for New Beer’s Eve?

At Total Wine & More, we’ll be raising our glasses. Every April 6, also known as New Beer’s Eve, ushers in National Beer Day on April 7. That’s the anniversary of the day beer sales resumed across the United States back in 1933, following the nation’s long, dry spell known as Prohibition.

On March 22 in 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Cullen-Harrison Act, authorizing the sale of beer and wine for the first time in 13 years. This was not the end of Prohibition – that required the ratification of the 21st Amendment later that year – but happily, the beginning of the end, when Roosevelt famously noted, “I think this would be a good time for a beer.”

mug-beer-slide

Though the taps opened at midnight on April 7, it took some time for American beers to return to form. Close to 1,400 breweries had operated in the country before Prohibition took effect in 1920, Garrett Oliver notes in the “Oxford Companion to Beer.” Those that didn’t fold outright during the ban scraped by making soft drinks or ice. By 1933, only 164 breweries remained.

“The art of brewing was largely lost,” says Rob Hill, author of “The Total Guide to Beer.” “The old beer-makers had retired, and there was a whole younger generation who’d never even had beer.” Traditional recipes had been forgotten or lost. Quality ingredients were scarce. And adding insult to injury, post-Prohibition regulations required beer to have no more than 3.2 percent alcohol by volume (a modern lager like Budweiser is 5 percent ABV).

And yet. “Today the United States has a world-renowned, world-respected craft beer scene,” Hill marvels. “That’s kind of a typical American success story. In a relatively short period of time, since Prohibition, we came back to make what are considered some of the best beers in the world.”

Rob Hill, Author of “The Total Guide to Beer”

That’s why we’re celebrating. Why not do the same, enjoying some great American beers that have passed the test of time since the Prohibition era? Like Texas’ Shiner, whose premium golden lager has been brewed since 1909. Or a refreshing Rolling Rock, which began brewing in Latrobe, Pa., in 1939 but sports a mysterious “33” – perhaps in tribute to the end of Prohibition – on its label. Or the iconic Pabst Blue Ribbon, whose Milwaukee brewers turned to cheese-making during the Prohibition years.

Find these storied survivors – and the new American brews they’ve inspired – at your local Total Wine & More. And pick up a free copy of the Total Guide to Beer while you’re in store.

Hard Soda Shows No Sign of Going Flat

best damn root beer, Coney Island Root Beer, hard soda, Henry's Hard Soda, Not Your Father's Root Beer, soda

Thanks to the skyrocketing popularity of craft beers and ciders, brewers are looking for ways to put their creativity to the test. Recently, they’ve created a whole new category of tasty brews that we’re calling hard sodas.

Not-Your-Fathers-3

Last year, the award-winning Not Your Father’s Root Beer, from Small Town Brewery in Wauconda, Ill., took the beer world by storm. A spiced ale, it tastes a lot like root beer, featuring traditional flavors of cinnamon, vanilla, anise and sarsaparilla bark. Blessed with a 94-point rating by Beer Advocate, it has continued to draw in devotees from across the country. In fact, Not Your Father’s Root Beer was one of the country’s 30 top-selling craft beers in 2015. Word of its success has inspired many other brewers.

coney-island-2

Brooklyn’s Coney Island Brewing Co. has attracted its own following with its Hard Root Beer, which boasts a similar flavor profile to Not Your Father’s Root Beer, but with a bit more effervescence. Anheuser-Busch has thrown its macro hat into the ring with its Best Damn Root Beer, a sign that big brewers are turning their attention to this phenomenon. However, the rise of hard soda involves much more than root beer.

nyfga

Small Town Brewery has used its success to introduce other offerings like Not Your Father’s Ginger Ale. Inspired by brewmaster Tim Kovac’s childhood memories of his family’s homemade ginger ale and hard lemon candy, Not Your Father’s Ginger Ale offers a ginger-and-citrus body with hints of black currant.

henrys

A recent addition to the pack is Henry’s Hard Orange, which is made with real cane sugar and orange flavor for a fresh citrus feel. It is joined by Henry’s Hard Ginger Ale. Produced by MillerCoors, Henry’s Hard Sodas are further proof that the hard-soda boom shows no sign of going flat.

We have even more examples in store! Get a taste of the trend by stopping by your neighborhood Total Wine & More.

St. Patrick’s Day beers that will make Ireland green with envy

Beer, Stout

guinness_shamrock

We have Irish beers on the mind today, but at Total Wine & More we know that great beers don’t have to hail from the Emerald Isle to be worthy of a St. Patrick’s Day toast. American craft brewers, inspired by the classic brews of Ireland, are making excellent Irish-style beer right here at home.

irish-boulevard

4,000 miles from Dublin, Boulevard Brewing Co. of Kansas City pays tribute to the Red Ales of old Ireland with Boulevard Irish Ale. Offering a sweet aroma of roasted caramel malts with hints of earthy, floral and citrus hops, it tastes of caramel, toasted malts and a touch of hop-driven bitterness.

irish-deschutes

While Ireland’s Guinness is the standard-bearer in the Stout category, American brewers also offer worthy examples of the style. Obsidian Stout from Oregon’s famed Deschutes Brewery is one of our best examples. Deep and robust, it has distinct notes of espresso, chocolate, roasted malt and black barley. It’s a beer that certainly lives up to its 93-point score from Wine Enthusiast.

irish-left-hand

The nitro trend has produced a fantastic array of beers. The addition of nitrogen to beer results in smaller bubbles that give the beer a creamier, smoother profile. The Milk Stout Nitro from Left Hand Brewing Co. of Longmont, Colo. greets you with aromas of brown sugar, vanilla cream and hints of roasted coffee. Initially roasty, mocha flavors rise up with slight hops and roasted bitter notes. It is truly a dark and delicious beer.

While we’ve covered just a few great Irish-style beers for St. Patrick’s Day, we have more than 2,500 beers of all types waiting for you. Stop by Total Wine & More today and make your own St. Patrick’s Day beer menu.

Spring may not officially start until later this month, but at Total Wine & More we’re already well into spring beer season. Today, we’re sharing just a few of our favorites so you can get a head start on the season.

summer-beer-4-Recovered

Available from January to April, Red Chair NWPA from Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery is a robust IPA that offers a citrus punch. A variety of European and domestic malts give this beer, which boasts a 92-point score from Beer Advocate, lovely caramel flavors that complement its citrus and floral notes.

summer-beer-1
While seasonal beers are typically offered by craft brewers, even some bigger breweries are getting in on spring. Blue Moon Brewing Co.’s First Peach Ale is an intriguing combination of classic Belgian sour brown Ale with American Peach Wheat Ale. True to its name, it offers flavors of peach, caramel and malt-driven sweetness.

summer-beer-3

In New England, home of Harpoon Brewery, the arrival of spring is real cause for celebration. Harpoon’s The Long Thaw White IPA offers an abundance of flavors from orange to coriander and a spicy, clean finish. It’s the perfect way to warm up while evenings are still cool.

summer-beer-2

We couldn’t talk spring beers without paying respect to a beer that celebrates the arrival of the season along with another milestone. The Shiner Birthday Beer from beloved Spoetzl Brewery is a hoppy, German-style Pilsner that celebrates the brewery’s establishment in 1909.

Shop our full selection of seasonal spring beers by stopping by your neighborhood Total Wine & More, or head to our website to see our entire spring beer selection.
