Discover Italy, Italian wine, Piedmont, Southern Italy, Tuscany, Valdadige, Veneto, wine regions

Italy_FB_Cover_Dates

We’re about to embark on a tour of Italy’s most beautiful and historic regions – by way of the wines produced there. At Total Wine & More, it’s time for Discover Italy, our two-week exploration of the country’s wines, with in-store tastings, classes and special deals on some remarkable Italian wines.

Italy’s wines come from all over the boot-shaped peninsula, which boasts a mix of terrains and climates providing ideal conditions for many types of vines. Combined with Italy’s reputation for wonderful cuisine – and the Italian tradition that considers wine part of a meal – it’s no wonder Italy is the source of so much good wine.

Il Pozzo

Its wine regions crowd the map from the Alpine peaks of the Alto Adige to Puglia, in the heel of the boot, plus the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Some of the greatest wines come from five regions:

Piedmont

This northwestern region translates as “foot of the mountains,” and its abundant hillsides offer optimal terrain for vines. Barolo and Barbaresco are classic Piedmont red wines made with Nebbiolo grapes; Gavi and Arneis are fresh and delicious white wines produced in the region.

Valdadige

In Italy’s northeast, the cool climate is ideal for producing dry white wines – especially fine Pinot Grigios.

Veneto

The Veneto is Italy’s largest wine-producing area, home of the zesty Pinot Grigios and bubbly Proseccos we love. The region’s bright Bardolino and Valpolicella wines are wonderful reds for warm weather.

Tuscany

This beautiful and central region is home to Sangiovese, the iconic Italian grape that produces the famed red wines Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, among others.

Southern Italy

The regions south of Rome have produced wine since the Greeks crossed the seas and planted vines 3,000 years ago. The warm south is a source for ripe and flavorful wines in both traditional and modern styles.

Italy_Twitter2

That’s just a hint of the wines produced across the Italian map. Looking to really get to know a region and its wines? Consider our Under the Tuscan Sun class, a deep dive into the wines of Italy’s most storied wine region, held in our area stores Thursday, June 9.

Or just stop by this weekend or next (6/9-6/12 and 6/16-6/19), when we’ll be pouring crisp whites, classic red styles and lovely aromatic sparkling wines, so you can Discover Italy one sip at a time.

Lord Hobo will be rubbing shoulders with Jim Beam. Citizen Cider will be alongside Martin Ray.

Who are these characters? Boston-area residents know: These are some of their favorite wines, spirits and beers. All will be in attendance at Total Wine & More’s newest store at the Gateway Center in Everett, Mass., opening Thursday, May 12.

The 18,000-square-foot store, our second in Massachusetts and closest to central Boston, will carry some 8,000 wines, 3,000 spirits and 2,500 beers. Our store team, the best-trained in the business, will help customers navigate the new store and tremendous selection.

“We’re going to have great service and a great assortment of products including local wines and beers,” said Tom Shea, Total Wine & More district manager.

The store has an event space where we’ll host classes to enhance your knowledge of your favorite beverages, and introduce you to the rock stars of our world: the winemakers, distillers and brewers who make the products you love. There’s a walk-in cigar humidor, featuring our primo selection of smokes. And a tasting table where we’ll always have something new for you to try. Stop by and join in on the tastings every Friday and Saturday from 12-6 p.m., or Sunday from 12-5 p.m.

Check it all out during our Grand Opening celebration, which spans three weekends beginning May 12. As part of our commitment to the Everett community, we’ll donate a portion of opening weekend sales, May 12-15, to Project Bread. The anti-hunger program, based in East Boston, works to bring healthy food to neighborhoods across Massachusetts.

So join us at Everett’s Total Wine & More – at the Gateway Center, 11 Mystic View Road – during our Grand Opening weekend. We’ll be posting to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media channels, so join us there, too, and share your Grand Opening impressions with us using #totalwineGO.

Taste Washington, Washington, Washington Wine, WAwine

Think you know Washington wine?

There’s plenty to know, of course. Washington produces more wine than any state save California, with an ever-increasing number of growers and wineries setting up shop here, each year turning out new and different wines that show off the excellence of the terroir and the talent of the winemakers.

There’s no better way to stay on top of Washington wine than spending an afternoon at Taste Washington, the annual festival celebrating the state’s flourishing wine and food scene. Now in its 19th year, the Seattle event will offer attendees a taste of 225 wineries, 70 restaurants and 60 culinary exhibitors from across the region at its Grand Tasting, April 2 and 3 at the CenturyLink Field Event Center.

taste-wa-large“It’s a great opportunity to sample every winery – well-known ones, some not-so-well-known ones – and you walk around a huge room and taste food and wine, filling your plate with little meals from the top local restaurants,” says Susan Prouse, manager at the Olympia, Wash. Total Wine & More, looking forward to her third festival. “You’ll never have that opportunity anywhere else.”

Taste Washington is billed as the nation’s largest single-region wine and food event.

Winemakers from across the state will be pour samples for attendees, providing the chance to meet the folks who create some of Washington’s most buzzed-about wines. Premier event sponsor Total Wine & More will also be there, with Prouse and other Total Wine experts offering visitors a taste of some very special wines carried in our stores.

taste-washington“We set up a couple of barrels at the Total Wine & More booth, we’re pouring, we have an opportunity to talk to people who are getting to know our stores in the Seattle area. And we give away free stuff!” Prouse added. Attendees may snag the latest edition of Total Wine & More’s Guide to Wine, wine tote bags or special offers that can be used on their next trip to a local store.

The Taste Washington festival officially begins Thursday, March 31 with the gala Red & White Party and continues through the weekend with more events, educational seminars and the two-day Grand Tasting. For more information and tickets, visit http://tastewashington.org/.

Evergreen State, Silverdale, WA, Washington, Washington State

1412-storefront-OThe windows are covered up, but Cathy Wheaton is working inside the new Silverdale Total Wine & More, and she sees you trying to take a peek.

“We’ve been getting a lot of calls, a lot of interest,” said Wheaton, assistant manager of the next store to open at The Trails at Silverdale. “We’ve had tons of people walking up and looking in the door, and at the chalkboard right outside.”

The wait is over for your new Total Wine & More, where we’ll uncover the windows and open the doors Thursday and welcome the community with a flurry of Grand Opening celebrations. The store is unlike any other in the Pacific Northwest.

Step inside, and you’ll see miles of aisles stocked with more than 8,000 wines, 3,000 spirits and 2,500 beers from around the world. There’s a team of expertly trained specialists to lend you a hand. And right inside the front door is something really special: long shelves displaying the “Best of Washington,” a bountiful selection of Washington-made wines, artisanal spirits and hearty beers that show off the skill of the state’s winemakers, distillers and brewers.

We open Thursday, March 10, at 9 a.m., and will have special events going on all weekend. Stop by for tastings (starting at 4 p.m.) featuring Caymus, Camaraderie Cellars, River Road, Chateau Ste. Michelle, Heritage Distilling, Jack Daniel’s, Woodford Reserve, Silver City Brewery and more.

The grand opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the Total Wine & More store at Westfield Mall in Olympia, Washington.

Shop with us March 10-13, and we’ll donate a portion of our sales to support the Kitsap Great Give on May 3, a day of giving produced by the Kitsap Community Foundation and the United Way. That’s just the first way Total Wine & More hopes to give back to the community that’s giving us such a warm welcome.

“We’ll be going out and working with the community,” said Wheaton, whose previous volunteer efforts have ranged from highway cleanup to releasing baby salmon raised in local classrooms.

“We have a really good team, all from the community, and all very diverse in their backgrounds,” she added. “Some have a tremendous amount of wine knowledge” – including one staffer who once ran an area specialty wine shop – “and some are very smart about spirits and beer. I love that we’re going to get to know all the customers, and they’re going to get to know us!”
